Field sharpness. From Doug Brown’s review it is clear that the extender 2X III delivers a crisp image with the EF 600mm F/4 IS II in controlled conditions and at close distance. A white-tailed kite is of course a more challenging subject as the soft, low-contrast white feathers expose any weakness in the optics, such as chromatic aberrations. The EF 2x II doubles the focal length of any lens it\'s mounted to, and reduces its effective aperture by two stops. With the EF 2x II, AF is possible with any EOS body if the lens has an f/2.8 or faster maximum aperture, and compatible Image Stabilization lenses maintain the IS feature when used with any current EOS camera. Like the rest of the Canon Super Telephoto lenses, the 600 IS L is compatible with the Canon EF Extenders. It will also work with lenses that are not normally compatible with a extender. The EXIF gets a little messed up, but lists the RF Extender so it's not unworkable. Not ideal, but it's just a hack. And the RF extender is a lot sharper than the EF II, at least to my eye.
